What Is the Kitchen Zone? —
The kitchen zone costs more beginners more points than any other rule in pickleball. Understand it fully and your game changes immediately.

THE RULE — ONE SENTENCE
You cannot volley the ball while standing inside the kitchen — or on the kitchen line.
The kitchen zone is a 7-foot area on each side of the net. Hitting the ball out of the air (a volley) from inside it is a fault. Everything else — entering it, standing in it, hitting a bounced ball from inside it — is completely legal.
Three Myths Beginners Believe

“I can’t go into the kitchen at all.”
✅ TRUTH
You can enter anytime. You just can’t volley from inside it.
❌ MYTH
“The kitchen line itself is safe — only inside is a fault.”
✅ TRUTH
Touching the line on a volley is a fault. The line is part of the kitchen.
❌ MYTH
“I have to leave the kitchen before hitting again.”
✅ TRUTH
Only true for volleys. You can hit a bounced ball from inside the kitchen freely.
