The kitchen zone costs more beginners more points than any other rule in pickleball. Understand it fully and your game changes immediately.

THE RULE β ONE SENTENCE
You cannot volley the ball while standing inside the kitchen β or on the kitchen line.
The kitchen zone is a 7-foot area on each side of the net. Hitting the ball out of the air (a volley) from inside it is a fault. Everything else β entering it, standing in it, hitting a bounced ball from inside it β is completely legal.

You can enter anytime. You just can’t volley from inside it.

“The kitchen line itself is safe β only inside is a fault.”

Touching the line on a volley is a fault. The line is part of the kitchen.

“I have to leave the kitchen before hitting again.”
